Taiwanese rocker A-Yue and friends pack Sennheiser in Asia tour

In the midst of a four-month tour in various Asian cities, Taiwanese rock musician Zhang Zhenyue and his band Free9 and crew count on Sennheiser to deliver the right pitch and effect every stop on the route.

Zhang, better known as A-Yue, is an award-winning artiste with a number of love ballads and upbeat pop-rock tracks under his belt. The multi-talented singer-songwriter, who also plays the guitar and is familiar to many as a dance music deejay, released his first album in 1993 but is perhaps best remembered for his 1998 hit, Don't Leave If You Love Me.

Together with his band Free9 — consisting of a keyboardist, drummer, bassist and two guitarists — main vocalist A-Yue pulled off two crowd-pullers in Taipei and Shanghai on 23rd August and 30th August, respectively. According to tour manager George Trivino, the most challenging part of the tour was putting up an entirely “new show” particularly as the band had performed in Shanghai only at the beginning of the year.

Sennheiser is “definitely” an important part of the team, said Trivino. The company equipped the band with e 900 and e 600 series microphones, SKM 935 G2 handheld transmitter, ew 300 IEM G2 wireless monitoring systems, and the EM 550 G2 twin receiver.

“Sennheiser was great in supporting Free9 with the new microphones and ear monitors. The
SKM 935 G2 lent power to A-Yue’s vocals and gave that crisp edge to it,” he explained. “The ear monitors allowed the band to move about during their performance, which was refreshing indeed for the audience.”

For front-of-house engineer and industry veteran Don Lo, the 935 cardioid dynamic capsule was the highlight of the concerts. “Whether the 935 is paired with the SKM 500 or the SKM 5200, or even a wired microphone, it rocks.”

“The 935 capsule has been a standard request for most of my shows — I like the way it boosts the vocals and requires very little equalizing,” noted Lo.

The audio engineer also praised the e 906 microphone for guitar amps. “The instrument output was rich and well-balanced, particularly for A-Yue,” he said.

Sennheiser will continue to be on the band’s packing list through the remainder of the tour, which will take the team through Singapore, Hong Kong as well as the Chinese cities of Wuhan, Xi'An, Nanjing, Chongqin, Chengdu, with the final show for Year 2008 slated for New Year’s Eve in Beijing on the 30th and 31st of December.
