Sennheiser Stars at the American Music Awards
Sennheiser artists were in the spotlight during the live telecast of the 35th Annual American Music Awards on ABC on Sunday, November 18th, when Beyoncé, Rihanna and Fergie all received honors in major categories. Sennheiser wireless handheld vocal microphones were at the forefront throughout the evening, from Fergie’s show-opening medley to Beyoncé’s much anticipated guest performance with Sugarland, along with a variety of the evening’s top performers, including Rihanna, Celine Dion, Mary J. Blige, Avril Lavigne and the Jonas Brothers.
Kicking off the evening off with a three-song medley, Fergie performed “Fergilicious” with Black Eyed Peas band mate Will.i.am followed by “Clumsy” and the chart-topping “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” using a hybrid Sennheiser SKM 5200 wireless handheld with Neumann KK 105 S capsule. Fergie later picked up the final award of the night, for Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist.
Beyoncé regularly uses a Sennheiser SKM 5200 wireless mic with the new Sennheiser
MD 5235 capsule, and made her highly-anticipated guest appearance on the show, joining Sugarland on the dynamic country duo’s bluegrass version of her top-selling worldwide hit, “Irreplaceable.” Beyoncé was awarded with the prestigious International Artists Award, becoming only the sixth recipient and the first female artist to be honored. The award recognizes a career that, so far, has included 130 million record sales worldwide, reaching platinum sales status 160 times, and has included 23 number one hits. Her tours have taken her to thirty countries, and she has received 150 awards, including nine Grammy Awards — five in 2003 alone.
Rihanna, was selected as the Favorite Female Soul/R&B Artist. Recently honored with two awards at the MTV VMAs, along with an MTV Europe Music Award, the young Barbados singer performed a short excerpt from her ubiquitous single, “Umbrella,” — which was a worldwide smash — before being joined by Ne-Yo for “Hate That I Love You.”
Avril Lavigne wielded her custom-painted, hot pink Sennheiser
SKM 935 G2 handheld wireless mic on a rendition of “Hot,” the latest single from her “The Best Damn Thing” album. The Canadian singer has favored the Sennheiser wireless vocal mic since her very first tour.
A screaming horde of teenage fans ran down the aisles to the front of the stage as the Jonas Brothers arrived onstage to play their big hit, “SOS.” Kevin, Joe and Nick all used Sennheiser SKM 5200s for the performance.
Also on the show was Celine Dion, another longtime user of the Sennheiser SKM 5000 and Neumann capsule. Dion took the opportunity to preview her upcoming world tour with the new song, “Taking Chances.”
Mary J. Blige used the SKM 5200 with Neumann capsule to present the live debut of her new song, “Just Fine,” the lead single from her eighth album, “Growing Pains.”
The American Music Awards, in their 35th year, honor pop/rock, country, soul/rhythm & blues, rap/hip-hop, Latin, alternative, soundtrack, adult contemporary and contemporary inspirational music. Nominees are selected based on national sales and radio play. And this year, for the first time, winners were chosen by public votes cast online.
