The IFA turns 50
Sennheiser at the International Consumer Electronics Show
The IFA International Consumer Electronics Show is celebrating a very special birthday this year. It will be the 50th time that the IFA has opened its doors to all those interested in the very latest technology. For several decades, Sennheiser has been presenting its products at the world’s biggest show for consumer electronics. And once again this year, the audio specialist will be showcasing its latest product innovations at the IFA.

The launch of colour television, the introduction of the audio CD and the presentation of the first MP3 player – there has never been a shortage of innovations on display at the IFA. The consumer electronics show, which is held right next to Berlin’s famous Funkturm communications tower, presents the world’s highest number of product premieres in consumer electronics and household appliances. And, ever since 1950, audio specialist Sennheiser has also showcased many of its product innovations here. “The IFA has been one of the most important trade shows for Sennheiser ever since the company was formed," said Susanne Seidel, President Global Marketing. “We congratulate the International Consumer Electronics Show on its anniversary and look forward once again to exciting and promising days in Berlin." Among Sennheiser's historic milestones at the show are, for example, the first headphones with a completely open design. The legendary HD 414 was to become the world's best-selling headphones, with sales of over 10 million units. In 1975, the company presented its first wireless infrared headphones at the fair, followed two years later by the first electrostatic headphones. In 1991, it was the perhaps world's best and most expensive headphones, the Orpheus that was to cause a sensation. Sennheiser's new top-of-the-range HD 800 followed in its footsteps in 2009. During the IFA from 3 to 8 September, visitors will have the opportunity to test the new headphones directly at the Sennheiser stand. Sennheiser can be found every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Hall 3.2, Stand No. 124 at the Messe Berlin exhibition centre.
About the IFA
The IFA began in Berlin in 1924 as the “Great German Radio Exhibition”. In the meantime, the International Consumer Electronics Show has not only become the world's biggest trade show for consumer electronics but also presents the world's largest number of product premieres in consumer electronics and home appliances. After its foundation, the IFA was initially held every year until 1939. After the Second World War, it took place every two years, with a few exceptions, and sometimes at different locations, until finally becoming established once again as an annual event under Berlin’s famous Funkturm landmark.
